Industrial Sludge to Eco-Brick

The idea for a brick made from industrial sludge was born while trying to find sustainable solutions to stop the malpractice of toxic sludge disposal. Sri Lankan industries produce over 25,000 Metric tonnes of ETP sludge every year of which 70% gets dumped in landfill mostly due to lack of legislation. In 2011 MAS began extensive research and development to create a long-term solution for the problem of ETP sludge. After months of intense R&D the teams achieved a breakthrough which turned ETP sludge into eco bricks. The Eco Brick project at the MAS Fabric Park in Thulhiriya has since become one of the group’s most sustainable initiatives towards zero landfill. In 2017 MAS produced over 200,000 bricks inside MFP. In 2015 MAS expanded the project to the Biyagama Industrial Zone with the construction of a state of the art Solar Sludge Dryer complete with a fully automated robot that helps MAS to manage 1,600 tonnes of wet sludge per year.
